Just some brief comments on the filler in general, this marks the end of the “Rice Field Country” filler arc, but next episode will begin a new filler arc. At this point it is unclear how long this next arc will last, probably 5-6 episodes like the one that just ended. Since it appears like it might involve Kurenai and Asuma in some way, it may go even longer by allowing some of their teams to shine. See the topic thread for more comments on the next episode.

In addition to selling the Viz translations of the Naruto manga, your local U.S. Borders now may be carrying the Masashi Kishimoto Uzumaki artbook. This was the book released last fall which contained almost all the colored Naruto manga pages, including inner pages, volume covers and the voting results pages. The book remains in its untranslated Japanese form, but since 90% of the book is dedicated to the clean artwork, a non-native speaker can enjoy the book just as much. The book retails for approximately $28 but your local price may vary.

Viz seems to be moving rather quickly to insure that Naruto will have a mass market of items on the horizon this fall when the anime begins airing on Cartoon Network. They just recently signed a deal with mall staple Hot Topic to sell “junior girls T-shirts, men’s T-shirts, and men’s hoodies as well as NARUTO branded stickers, pins, patches and headbands” in their stores this Fall. Viz’s website will also offer online apparel purchasing.

Could a licensing deal with a toy maker be next on the horizon? I hope so, lets hope the deal with Bandai may extend to some of their larger 6 inch figures they released in Japan. The limited Bandai line included Kakashi, Naruto and Sasuke, and they featured great sculpting and multiple points of articulation. If such a line could be brought over and greatly expanded, the fan base will eat them up.
